The Durham West Arts Centre is a 'hub' organization working to establish links with artists, arts groups and arts lovers. We host exhibitions, activities and events at the Centre as attractors. We want to meet and talk to the groups and individuals who are willing to help build the infrastructure for a permanent arts centre in Ajax-Pickering.
The lichen affiliated poets, hosted by poet Andrea Stone, were a great hit on August 5th. They kicked off the Thursday literary evenings which take place the first Thursday of every month between 7 and 9 p.m. Ruth Walker worked with April Polak to arrange that evening as well as the equally successful night featuring readings from, "As We Were Saying..." by a group of Oshawa seniors. October 7th The Writing Fairy touched down at DWAC and November 4th will bring the launch of the latest lichen journal to the Durham West Arts Centre.
Anne Louise Currie is a poet living and working in Oshawa, Ontario. In this past year, she was selected as a finalist in the lichen "Tracking a Serial Poet" competition; her poem, "Pressed", won third place in the Pandora's Collective, "Kisses and Popsicles" Poetry Contest, and her poem, "Dis/Closure" was selected for inclusion in the Saving Bannister poetry anthology published by the Niagara Branch of the Canadian Authors Association.
Antony Di Nardo divides his time between Oshawa, Ontario, and Sutton, Quebec. His poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in several journals, including The Fiddlehead, Descant, sub-Terrain, and CV2. He recently won an Honourable Mention in The Fiddlehead's Ralph Gustafson Award for Poetry. Antony's poems received an Honourable Mention in lichen's "Tracking a Serial Poet" competition and appear in the current issue of lichen.
Glenn Kletke lives in Kanata, Ontario. His work can be found in incunabula, bywords, The Grist Mill, and a previous issue of lichen. His new collection of poems House On The Edge of Ice appeared in the spring of 2004. Glenn's work placed as a runner-up in the "Tracking a Serial Poet" competition and appears in the current issue of lichen.
Laura Taylor is a freelance writer and photographer in Guelph, Ontario. Her second documentary photography show "Sleeping Beauty: Cuba" is slated for November 2004 at The Bookshelf in Guelph. Her first book, the literary memoir A Taste for Paprika (Shoreline Press), was launched at the 2004 Eden Mills Writers' Festival. Her photographs appear in lichen's current issue.
Elana Wolff has published two collections of poetry with Guernica Editions, Toronto: Birdheart (2001) and Mask (2003). Her work has garnered a number of awards and appeared in publications in Canada, the US, and the UK. She contributes a column, "How to Approach a Poem", to the monthly arts newspaper Surface and Symbol. Elana's work won first place inÊlichen's "Tracking a Serial Poet" competition and appears in the current issue of lichen.
