What is DWAC?
The Durham West Arts Centre is a 'hub' organization working to establish
links with artists, arts groups and arts lovers. We want to meet and
talk to the groups and individuals who are willing to help build the infrastructure
for a permanent arts centre in Ajax-Pickering.

hiding edith edith will be speaking to the grade five and six students of Glengrove public school, pickering on november 10.
Holocaust survivor Edith Gelbard and author Kathy Kacer whose latest book Hiding Edith: A True Story describes the wartime experiences of Edith Schwalb Gelbard, a young Jewish girl sent to live in the French town of Moissac after the invasion of France by Germany, speak Nov 5 th at 8 p.m. at the Leah Posluns Theatre, 4588 Bathurst Street, Toronto 416-537-7850.
Edith's story is remarkable not only for her own bravery, but also for the bravery of those who helped her—an entire town which heroically conspired to conceal the presence of hundreds of Jewish children living in the "safe" house. Kathy Kacer is the award-winning author of The Secret of Gabi's Dresser, Clara's War and The Night Spies.
Jury Comments on the Finalists for the 2006 Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children's Non-Fiction
Hiding Edith: A True Story by Kathy Kacer
"A wonderful, poignant story that has never been told before … Children will be captivated by this book … The writing is fantastic and reads like fiction … An extraordinarily uplifting true story."
Hiding Edith, along with the others in the "Holocaust Remembrance" series published by Second Story Press, should be part of every elementary school library collection. They should be taught not just as lessons in history but also as lessons that relate to events taking place right now around the globe. In a world where genocide still occurs, children should be aware that they can make a difference in a variety of ways, perhaps different than in World War II, but that the lesson of the Holocaust - Never Again - is dependent on them. Harriet Zaidman, teacher-librarian, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
